LiModPress Mechanisches Batteriemodul

Project

LiModPress

Developing a working prototype of a modular lithium-ion battery system based on the hydraulic compression of single cells

Energy

The objective of the project is to validate the advantages of a battery architecture based on hydraulic pressing. The project team is working to develop a hydraulically pressed cell stack for industrial applications and they are centring their efforts on developing a working prototype of a novel battery system.

Starting Point

Currently, the political developments in the area of electromobility create immense economic potential for the Ruhr Metropolis in battery systems development, production and sales. Proving the potential of hydraulically pressed battery cells could allow the Ruhr Metropolis to provide an important contribution to electromobility.

Our Solution

The objective of the project is to validate the advantages of a battery architecture based on hydraulic pressing. Based on the positive results obtained in the previous project, the project team is working to develop a hydraulically pressed cell stack for industrial applications and the they are centring their efforts on developing a working prototype of a novel battery system. This system opens up the potential to implement a wide range of innovative design approaches for cooling concepts and applications in mobile and stationary battery system module. The intended concept of hydraulic pressing offers the possibility continuously keep the cells at their optimum operating point, which is possible thanks to the hydraulic fluid bathing the cells. Thus, the cells are always homogeneously pressed, and their total surface area is efficiently cooled.
