EMEL
Developing the Charge Controller
Energy management in Metropolitan eMobility Charging Infrastructure (EMEL) is a project about the system integration of the charging point and the charging infrastructure in sustainable energy systems. Project EMEL – Developing the Charge Controller, focuses on enabling the charging station to integrate into a cloud structure, making the use of IT based payment systems and energy management possible.
Starting Point
In order to develop an efficient charging infrastructure for metropolitan regions, we need a modular charging point system to integrate the individual charging points into different infrastructures: the smart home, the smart factory and the smart grid. In this regard, it is not enough to consider the interface between vehicle and charging point. Project EMEL – Developing the Charge Controller, focuses on the interface between charging point and grid infrastructure (backend), in order to enable the charging station to integrate into a cloud structure, making the use of IT based payment systems and energy management possible.
Our Solution
Energy management in Metropolitan eMobility Charging Infrastructure (EMEL) is a project about the system integration of the charging point and the charging infrastructure in sustainable energy systems. Individual elements of the project will be further developed in associated projects.. Project EMEL – Developing the Charge Controller, focuses on the task of developing and building a gateway component for the communication of the charging station with the Internet of Things (IoT) platform and the energy management system. With this gateway component, and the charge controller and charging electronics from project EMEL – Developing the Charge Controller, the project team is developing a modular concept for charging stations, which can be flexibly integrated in the three charging scenarios: smart home, smart factory, and smart grid. The IoT gateway of the modular charging station comprises a microcontroller module with the necessary communications components, which include a data capable UMTS/LTE/GPRS mobile interface and wired interfaces, especially serial bus systems, necessary for smart home, smart factory and smart grid applications.

Throwback: InnovationMeetUp – 10.07.2025
From vision to financing
On 10 July 2025, our InnovationsMeetup on the topic of ‘From vision to financing’ took place in the inspiring location ‘Zum Kuhhirten’ in Bochum’s city centre – organised together with the Bochum Economic Development Agency.
One highlight of the evening was the exciting keynote speech by Jörg Gudat from Labs.Ruhr, who provided valuable insights as an experienced investor: How do you target investors? What prerequisites should start-ups have? And when is the right time for financing? His practical tips provided the participants with important ideas.
Afterwards, two start-up teams, Evovell and Roadstory, presented their business ideas in short, convincing pitches.
The evening offered not only informative impulses, but also plenty of opportunity for personal discussions over cold drinks and pizza – ideal for making contacts and expanding networks.
